Design competitions help to lift the industry and elevate designers’ profiles in the media and in the eyes of the public. According to Caesarstone South Africa’s marketing director, Trevor King, the vision for the competition is a big one, “We are exceptionally passionate about design because we believe in the intrinsic value of beauty and excellence. Bringing South Africa’s top kitchen designs to the world is in our DNA – we just hope we’ve helped to inspire the industry as a whole and challenged designers to keep pushing the boundaries.” The Caesarstone Kitchen of the Year competition is judged ‘blind’ by a diverse panel of experts.
Slick, sexy, streamline, clean-cut lines, no mess no fuss are just some of the words to explain this kitchen space. The client Extra Dimensions Property Group had a clear vision, “keep it simple, yet unique like no other.” The clients fell in love with shitake Caesarstone, with its subtle neutral tone and textural appearance.
We wanted to emphasise the stone in a different way. The idea was to take the traditional butchers block and give it a modern twist; by creating a ‘block of stone’ with hidden functionality. The entire island: doors, drawers, and any visible sides would be clad with Caesarstone. To complete this seamless look, no handles were used; instead, we created a slit opening as a finger hold to open the doors and drawers.
